Recently consumers have become very critical of the type and brand of dog food they buy. With the recent dog food scares many have turned to natural and organic dog foods, or have turned to making thier own homemade food for thier dogs. The develpoment of the nutritional guide now being posted conspicuously on the dog food packaging has sought to eliminate some of the stress of buying safe and healthy food, as well as providing a source for consumers to comparision shop with. The problem lies in the fact that there is no mechanism for a Dog Food Report to be given for a producer in terms of quality or the ingredients being used in their foods. Indeed, many manufacturers take no quality checks on their food, resulting in the lack of oversight should there be an issue with ingredients or the manufacturing process until the product is in the hands of the consumer. After the recent dog food incident where dozens of brands were unknowingly using bacteria infected grains and materials in manufacturing their kibble, the governments in a number of countries have considered requiring the manufacturers to compile a Dog Food Report for each batch of their food produced. This oversight requirement would be a little more costly for a company, but the benefits would be numerous. Providing a Dog Food Report would allow the average consumer to have a look at what exactly is being fed to their pet. The report would contain a quality report of the ingredients of the kibble, bringing peace of mind to the consumer and guarantee the freshness and safety of the food they are purchasing. The Dog Food Report would also give a nutritional value check of the food by an outside testing facility or government lab. The facility would verify the claims for nutrition, and would update a package with the newest report information. This would give a great deal of power to the consumer when buying thier dog food. A third benefit to such a report would be the transparency that all dog food makers would have, even the natural organic dog food maker, as the information would be widely available for all consumers to read and compare brands to one another. Brands would have some incentive to make their products better, and good products would have some positive publicity. The need for a Dog Food Report is critical for the production of safer, higher quality dog foods in this day and age. If manufacturers were required to do more oversight, the quality of the dog foods sold worldwide would improve drastically.
