Dogs are pack animals and thus social by nature. However, just as with people, some dogs socialize better than others. Some dogs even have problems socializing with the other sex (That sounds human!). Still considering that dog are pack animals it is weird that some dogs find it difficult to get acquainted to other dogs.

Many animal lovers like to have more than one dog around and often even other species. Ensuring that no furniture gets broken and nobody gets hurt can be somewhat of a challenge at times. Add to the equation that your neighbor's pets and other animals can enter your dog's territory you face a real risk, if your dog is not properly socialized.

You should start the process of socializing your dog as early as possible. Like children, puppies are much more open to accept strangers. They don?t distinguish yet between friend and foe and everything is a new experience to be explored rather than feared or chased.

If you have only one dog, expose him (as a puppy) early on to other dogs and people. Get him used to being touched, especially between the toes, in the ears and near the eyes. This will improve his interaction with other animals and it will make vet visits and trips around town a lot easier.

Dogs by nature explore with their noses. When you first let him meet other animals make sure that the other animals has been properly socialized to avoid violence. But by all means, let your puppy do all the sniffing he wants, because that will make him a better dog.

Some dogs will want to dominate by jumping on or biting the other. This is normal behavior and you should only interfere if things get out of hand. Make sure te be close to your dog and only in case of severe biting you should take action. If you're uncomfortable with that just bring some protection in the form of a pair of gloves.

If they bark constantly you might want to distract them with a snack or play a little bit until the next dog comes along or just try again the next day. What works or not differs from dog to dog and some dogs will have more difficulties to learn than others. You'll learn your dogs character over time while you observe his social behaviour.

An adopted dogs might need extra attention when you (re)socialize him. These dogs often have a past of abuse and injury invoked by humans or other dogs. Their natural tendency is to react with violence to other dogs and people. However they can be socialized and with a little bit of good will you can turn them in to wonderful dogs that love their families and play with other dogs.

With socializing it is very important to begin as soon as possible. Expose your puppy to as many other dogs as possible and you'll have a perfectly socially adapted dog.
