Choosing the right dog bed for your pet can go a long way toward ensuring that he will be both happy and comfortable. After all, he will be spending a lot of time stretched out either sleeping or relaxing. Wouldn't you rather he did this on his own bed rather than on your couch or bed?

When the time comes to choose a dog bed, there are a few important factors to consider. Let's take a look at some of these factors.

It won't be quite as simple as heading down to the closest pet shop and grabbing the first bed you see. With the huge variety in specialty pet beds, you will want to decide what type you want before you shop.

Most important is to choose a bed that will be large enough for your furry friend. Preferably, you should choose a bed that fits the size of your dog. Just as there are large breeds and even miniature breeds, there are also large dog beds and small ones. If for instance, you own a larger breed dog, he won't feel comfortable trying to stretch out on a small bed.

It's not as important if you have a small dog and get him a big bed, although some breeds are happiest if their sleeping quarters are not over sized. The only exception may be for a puppy. There you will want to buy a bed that he can grow into as he grows.

Another thing to consider is the material that the bed is made with. You can get them made out of everything from denim to fleece and many other types of heavier duty covering material.

When choosing a fabric think about the breed of your dog, the climate in your area and where the bed will be located. Dogs with heavier or longer coats may find canvas or cotton cooler to lie on. For short haired or smaller bred dogs, a warmer material, like fleece may be a better choice.

If you are choosing a bed for your pup to use outdoors, these are important considerations. There is not as much of an issue if your pet's bed is located inside. But even then, temperature should be considered when selecting a suitable bed.

Be sure to choose a bed that will fit into the available space. For instance, if your dog sleeps in his crate, it's important to get a bed that has been made to be used in a crate so it's the right fit. If space in your home is limited, a corner style bed may work.

Whenever possible, narrow down your choices to washable dog beds. But if the bed you decide on cannot be laundered, your next best option is a washable bed cover. When the cover gets dirty or acquires a doggy smell, just throw in your washing machine to clean it up.

One thing that should not be overlooked is the age and general health of your beloved pet. Even for younger more active dogs, a bed should come with a layer of dense, high quality foam. That way, his bed will maintain its shape and will provide lasting comfort.

A good quality bed is especially important for pets that may be experiencing joint pain for one reason or another. There are specially manufactured orthopedic dog beds to provide some relief. These beds are made using high density foam which provides better overall support. Dogs find it easier to get up off of an orthopedic bed, thereby putting less stress on the joints.

These are a few things to consider when looking for a bed for your dog. By taking the time to choose the right dog bed for your pet, you are helping to ensure that he will be happy and comfortable.
