Dog Bleeding Is Normal

Dogs bleeding in heat is a very common experiencing. However, if you are experiencing what you believe to be an emergency or there is much blood, apply a pressure compress and get to the closest veterinary emergency room. If your dog is experiencing anal bleeding, you should take it to the vet immediately. He/she may have eaten some splintering bones and could have intestinal bleeding. Beware of the friendly neighbor who throws ham or chicken bones over the fence when you're not watching. My favorite dog was killed by eating the wrong bones from an ignorant, "well-meaning" neighbor.

Estrus is similar but different than human menstruation. You may have a 6-8 month old female dog (possibly a pure bred dog) and are now facing the cycles of life. Female dogs "in heat" usually start their heat cycle or menstruation for the first time 6-8 months after birth. This can be easy enough to handle since it is usually not that much blood. Unlike human cycles, canine cycles are about twice a year and last about a month each time. During this time, take care to not have unintentional mating, you must keep your dog secure.

Breeders will adapt to this process by using dog diapers to stop the messes. You can add a clothe diaper that will then hold a sanitary napkin inside. The clothe diapers have soft cotton on the inside and don't slide off like disposable diapers. You can order this online by specialty manufactures. The diaper get used for years and get machined washable

My wife had tried the disposable diapers which did not work out too well. She either could not get the diaper to stay on or would have to add so much duct tape that dog was not very happy. Also you can confine your dog to a room or cage. Dog diapers are a nice solution to get your pet back into the home.

Spaying is what they call "fixing" a female dog. They remove the reproductive organs and stitch them back up. It quite involved surgery and cost about $100-$500. Wide range in prices due to government reimbursements. If you want to dog to have pups someday than you do not want to spay your dog.

I hope you do not decide to spay your dog simply to avoid the mess. Only do this if you decide not to breed your dog for very decided reasons. Again, you can always buy the diapers and add a sanitary napkin for less money than having to spay your dog.
